Is there any evidence that the WTS stated the 20th century would be the last?
by TTWSYF ini know that other early dates are well documented leading up to 1975. it did seemed that the wts learned to stop setting dates, but i seem to recall talk about the 20th century will certainly be the last according to god's perfect timing.
i can't recall specifically where i heard such blatant rhetoric though.. anyone?

For many decades, Awake carried a statement on its inside cover to the effect that "The Generation that was old enough to understand the beginning of the Time of The End in 1914 would still be around to see the End of the System". (It wasn't quite worded exactly like that - my memory is no longer that good!- but that was the substance of the message they put over).
Then ....... after a certain year, which in the Gregorian Calendar is numbered AD 1975, that statement was modified - just a little!
It now read to the effect that "The Generation that saw the beginning of the Time of the End would still be around to see its end".
I understand that this statement was again modified in the mid-1990s, although others will have to tell us exactly how, as I had parted company with them by that time.
Other than that, I am not aware of any 20th Century type remarks in Awake that were subsequently reprinted.

As late as 1989, the WTS was still claiming that the end would happen before before the close of the 20th Century
- see The Watchtower, January 1, 1989, page 12, paragraph 8.
Typically, though, the reprint of that issue of The Watchtower (i.e. in the "Bound Volumes") edited out all references to the "20th Century" and instead substituted "Our Time" in its place.

Rutherford though his booklets were better than the Bible

The story I used to hear bandied around was that "The Watchtower is more important than The Bible" - as Christendom has "Had the Bible for Centuries" yet it has done them "No Good".
Put yourself above The Bible, and the rest just follows naturally (such as all the rules, regulations and defacto Tulmud that the WTS/GB impose on their R&F).

Simon,
OK - understood. Such situations are practically war in everything but name, and there are definitely precedents for using preemptive lethal force.

What Kind of Activism?
by TerryWalstrom inactivism or any kind of push back really is not about the size of your emotion, your disgust, or the feeling of powerless frustration at the religion.being an ex-jw is about one of two things and two things only:1. being effective.
2. being ineffectiveto which i add: effective at what?1.
not identifying yourself as the foaming at the mouth, demonic, mentally diseased piece of shit the watchtower has framed you out to be in the minds of their captive slaves.2.

Terry,
From a personal satisfaction point of view, having a rant and blowing off some steam does have certain benefits. But then if you are intending to help others wake up to TTATT, then what you said was very correct.

Cofty and Simon,
A little off topic, perhaps, but I think still worth stating; your remarks about armed police are quite correct.
This was confirmed a few years ago by a former firearms instructor at the Police Training Academy, who readily volunteered that not all police have the necessary skills to be armed (as in the UK, the police in this country - New Zealand - are also largely unarmed).
Furthermore, those police trained to use firearms are taught to aim for the body trunk, which is most likely to result in a fatal wound. The consensus amongst all that have ever fired a hand gun (myself included) is that you are doing quite well to even hit the target at all, let alone be selective about whereabouts on the target the bullet is going to land. You definitely aim for "the centre of the biggest piece that you can see" if you expect any success! As for the idea of trying to "shoot to wound" with a high-powered weapon; if you have ever witnessed the destruction that a slug from such a weapon does to an animal, you would quickly shed yourself of such impractical ideas (again, pretty much the consensus amongst hunters).
"Shooting to wound" might work in a cowboy movie - in which the victim is a paid actor - but that is about all!
Contrary to what some believe, the police are not instructed to shoot to wound - and that was from the Commissioner for the Police Service in the Australian State of Victoria (and I don't believe it to be any different in the UK or elsewhere).

How do I get you to Visit my house
by I have question inokay simply put i am not of your faith however my faith allows me to learn and study other people's beliefs and faith's.
now i believe at least from what i have seen that you people are humble and respectful, when interacting with me.
and that watchtower book thing u hand out has actually helped me in the past.... taught me that resentment only hurts me and not the person i resented, that was really needed at the time.

There is no need to invite these people into your home in order to learn what their religion is all about. In fact, that would not even be the best approach.
For one thing, the typical current lot of Jehovahs Witnesses have very little idea of what it is they are supposed to believe in, beyond "Obey Without Question the Governing Body, and You Will Be Blessed." They would probably attempt more to use their literature to speak for them, but even that has been dumbed down to the level of little more than just , "Obey and be Blessed".
For another thing, if you were to invite them into your home, they could well then become just a bloody nuisance. A lot of the Jehovahs Witnesses can be surprisingly reluctant to take "No" for an answer. Sometimes (perhaps even often?) getting rid of them can make the proverbial "bad smell" seem like a welcome guest!.
There are various other ways of learning what this religion is all about:
- There are their literature stands that are frequently to be found in public places, such as the approaches to train stations etc. From those, their literature is available free of charge (for what it is worth!)
- Also, the Watchtower Corporation (their publishing arm) has its own website, www.jw.org. This is readily accessible to the public, and can at least give you their view of the JW religion.
- Then there are a number of Ex-JW websites such as this one, from which the real truth about this religion can be discovered. (Once you delve below the surface, you will find that these people have more than just a few "skeletons in the cupboard", so to speak!)
In your research, though, there is one thing to look out for, which I am certain all ex-JWs would agree on, and that is the offer of a "Free Home Bible Study". With somebody like yourself, the Jehovahs Witnesses would be very quick to offer to "Study the Bible" with you "In Your Own Home".
You would be well advised never to accept such an offer, as you would afterwards discover that this is just the first stage of the indoctrination process into their cult. ("Entry Level", you might say!). Furthermore, as many of us here found out to our detriment, extricating yourself is often a surprisingly difficult process.
In summary, this religion is a cult, and it is safest to learn about it from a distance!
PS: Persons such as yourself are welcome here any time.
